Today, however, construction is going through a radical transformation thanks to BIM and new technological advances that are majorly impacting its productivity and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>what is BIM? <\/strong>What are its<strong> benefits <\/strong>to the construction industry?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-bim\">What is BIM?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>BIM <\/strong>stands for &#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accasoftware.com\/en\/bim-building-information-modeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Building Information Modeling<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; or Building Information Model. The NIBS (National Institutes of Building Science) defines <strong>BIM <\/strong>as the &#8220;digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of an object&#8221;.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First of all, it is necessary to clarify that BIM is an operational methodology and not a tool that incorporates geometric (3D), temporal (4D), cost (5D), environmental (6D) and maintenance (7D) information. BIM can be intended as a process for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>programming<\/li>\n<li>designing<\/li>\n<li>operations<\/li>\n<li>maintenance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>of a building that uses a data-rich, object-oriented and parametric representation of the facility<strong>, <\/strong>that is basically a model carrying all the information relating to the building over the course of its entire life cycle. Specifically, BIM collects all the information relating to the development, growth and analysis process of multidimensional virtual models which are digitally generated by using specific software.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-advantages-of-bim-compared-to-traditional-methods\">What are the advantages of BIM compared to traditional methods?<\/h2>\n<p>BIM and CAD are two different approaches. BIM is not simply the evolution of CAD but a completely new way of looking at the design and construction of a building.<\/p>\n<p>The advantages of BIM over the traditional way of working are many, we will briefly list some of them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>time and cost savings: <\/strong>the designer will no longer have to draw an incredible amount of lines, polylines, and geometric shapes (which take a long time), but simply have dedicated smart objects with their own properties and information (material, cost, thermal capacity, maintenance, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>error reduction:<\/strong> floor plans, elevation views, and cross-sections are simply different views of the same object.
