As a matter of fact, the apartments located north of the corridor would be sun-deprived since facing only North.<br \/>\nA great architect like <strong>Le Corbusier<\/strong> solved the thermal imbalances problem (having light on the East side only in the morning and on the West side only in the afternoon) by designing apartments on two levels. The estate included\u00a0 <strong>twenty-one buildings <\/strong>comprising <strong>sixty dwellings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The housing development known as <strong>Weissenhofsiedlung<\/strong>, was commissioned to seventeen very influential architects:<strong> Le Corbusier<\/strong> (Charles Edouard Jeanneret-Gris), <strong>Josef Frank<\/strong>, <strong>Walter Gropius<\/strong>, <strong>Ludwig Mies van der Rohe<\/strong>, <strong>Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mies van der Rohe<\/strong> was in charge of the project, as architectural director of the Werkbund, and was appointed to select architects, manage the site and the budget and supervise the entire project. He delegated the various lots to the emerging members of German association of artists, designers, and architects while also arranging the<strong> urban planning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This estate was named <strong>Weissenhof<\/strong>, meaning <strong>white<\/strong> <strong>villagge <\/strong>in German, where white was the color symbol of this movement, likewise the flat roof and the big terraces. For this reason, it was said to be resembling an arabic village.<\/p>\n<p>Advertised as a prototype of future workers&#8217; housing, the buildings of the complex did not vary much in terms of form. Terraced houses, detached houses and blocks of flats were part of this great design consistency.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_39631\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39631\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39631\" src=\"https:\/\/biblus.accasoftware.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/Weissenhof-online-houses-BIM-software-section-Edificius.jpg\" alt=\"Weissenhof apartment building project - cross-section produced with Edificius\" width=\"700\" height=\"541\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-39631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Weissenhof apartment building project &#8211; cross-section produced with Edificius<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Typical features of these buildings are a <strong>basic<\/strong> <strong>facade, flat roofs used as terraces, strip windows<\/strong>, the so-called \u201c<em>free plan<\/em>\u201d and a<strong> high level of\u00a0 prefabrication. <\/strong>These characteristics allowed the construction to be terminated in only five months. It is generally considered as <strong>one of the most important residential neighbourhood of the Italian architecture between the end of \u201860s and \u201970s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Libertarian socialism\u2019 was the underlying force to De Carlo&#8217;s planning and design as it was meant to serve the local people&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<p>Some fundamental features of the project are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the pedestrian areas are separated from the car areas with rare intersections where strictly necessary.
