Discover how it works and how to improve it with digitalization

The electric network is a crucial infrastructure of our daily lives, even though we often take it for granted. It is thanks to this intricate system that the energy produced – often far from urban centers – reaches our homes, businesses, hospitals, and all points of consumption.

In recent years, there has been much discussion about energy production, decarbonization, and renewables. But the network that makes energy distribution possible is equally strategic. And today it is undergoing a profound transformation.

The increasing electrification of consumption, the spread of renewable sources, and the need for greater resilience are pushing the network towards a new model: more intelligent, connected, and digitalized.

Our exploration will delve into:

how the power distribution network works;

fundamental components and architectural principles;

the revolutionary impact of digital technologies on network management.

Navigating this complex transformation requires sophisticated, purpose-built tools. Two pivotal technological enablers have emerged:

Facility Management Software, which digitalize the entire lifecycle of electrical systems;

Geospatial Digital Twin Software, which create a 3D digital replica of the network to monitor infrastructures and simulate scenarios.

Embracing these innovative tools represents more than technological upgrades – it’s a strategic imperative for building resilient, sustainable, and future-ready energy ecosystems. For professionals in energy and infrastructure, the moment to act is now.

What is a power distribution network?

The power distribution network is the final stretch of the journey that energy takes from the point of generation to the end users. It is an extensive and branched infrastructure designed to receive energy from the transmission network, reduce its voltage, and distribute it safely to homes, businesses, hospitals, and industries.

To understand how it works, it is useful to distinguish between transmission network and distribution network:

transmission network: transports large amounts of energy over long distances, at very high voltages (220–380 kV), connecting large production plants to primary substations;

distribution network: starts right from the primary substations. Here, energy is transformed from high to medium voltage and, through further transformations, brought to levels compatible with domestic or industrial use.

The three levels of distribution

From a technical point of view, the network is divided into:

High voltage (HV): between 50 kV and 150 kV. Connects primary substations to the medium voltage network. Not to be confused with ultra-high voltage transmission (220–380 kV);

Medium voltage (MV): between 1,000 and 35,000 V. Reaches urban areas, industrial zones, and secondary substations;

Low voltage (LV): up to 1,000 V (typically 230/400 V). Powers homes, shops, and small businesses.

An increasingly complex and distributed network

The correct functioning depends on a coordinated set of elements: substations, transformers, power lines (overhead or underground), smart meters, and protection devices. The increasing distribution of production and the spread of prosumers, users who produce and consume energy, make its management more complex.

The network, originally designed to manage a unidirectional flow (from producer to consumer), now has to manage bidirectional flows, which are more variable and less predictable.

To face these new challenges, advanced digital tools are needed. Technologies such as sensors, monitoring platforms, and intelligent systems are essential to ensure flexibility, resilience, and continuity of service.

Flow of electric energy from generation to final consumption

The fundamental components of the network

The main elements that make up the power distribution network can be divided into two large categories:

physical components, that is, the material elements that constitute the infrastructure of the network, such as:

power lines, overhead or underground, that transport energy across the territory;

transformers, which adapt the voltage to the different levels required along the path;

substations (primary and secondary), which represent the fundamental nodes where transitions between high, medium, and low voltage occur;

digital and management components, increasingly relevant for improving efficiency, control, and reliability of the system, such as:

smart meters, for precise and automatic measurement of consumption;

protection and automation devices, to isolate faults and quickly restore service;

remote control systems, advanced sensors, and management software, useful for real-time monitoring of the network, performing predictive maintenance, and optimizing energy flows.

In the following paragraphs, we will analyze in more detail the main technical elements of the electric distribution network, the figures responsible for their operation, and the main critical issues that the system must face today.

Power lines, transformers, and substations

The power distribution network is based on a set of physical elements that, working together, allow for the transport, transformation, and delivery of energy to end users.

Power lines

Power lines constitute the basic infrastructure for transporting energy across the territory. They can be:

overhead, installed on poles or towers, with bare conductors suspended and insulated using porcelain or composite materials (insulation by distance);

underground, laid in underground conduits, with XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulated cables, shielded and protected by heat, moisture, and impact-resistant sheaths;

Transformers

Transformers modify voltage levels to adapt energy for transport or final use. They are present in:

primary substations, where they transform high voltage (50–150 kV) into medium voltage (15–20 kV);

secondary substations, where they convert medium voltage into low voltage (230/400 V) for final distribution.

Each transformer consists of a magnetic core and two windings (primary and secondary). The operation is based on electromagnetic induction.

Substations

Transformation substations are the strategic nodes of the network. They are divided into:

primary substations: entry point from the transmission network;

secondary substations: distribution of low voltage;

switching substations: for redundancy, interconnection, and sectioning.

Inside them, there are devices such as:

circuit breakers (opening/closing circuits);

disconnectors (safe isolation of sections);

automatic circuit breakers and relays (fault protection);

measuring instruments;

remote control systems.

Digital and smart components

Alongside these physical elements, digital technologies are becoming increasingly relevant:

protection devices: detect overcurrents, short circuits, or ground faults, quickly isolating critical sections;

sensors and monitoring: collect real-time data (voltage, current, frequency, power), useful for predictive diagnostics;

automation systems: control the network remotely with programmable logic and predictive algorithms (e.g., SCADA);

smart meters: record and communicate consumption bidirectionally, enabling dynamic tariffs, remote management, and active user participation.

Electric distribution network

Involved actors: who manages the power distribution network?

The power distribution network is managed by a complex ecosystem of actors, each with specific responsibilities. The increasing digitalization, the spread of distributed generation, and the electrification of consumption make coordination among these entities more crucial than ever.

The main actors involved in the management and development of the electrical system:

Network operators (DSO – Distribution System Operator): are responsible for the management, maintenance, and development of distribution networks. DSOs manage energy flows, ensure service quality, and facilitate the integration of renewables.

Regulatory authority (ARERA): the Regulatory Authority for Energy Networks and Environment defines technical and economic rules for the sector: tariffs, quality standards, and incentives. Its role is to ensure efficiency, transparency, and protection for users and operators.

National transmission system operator: is the entity responsible for balancing electricity production and consumption on a national scale, as well as ensuring the safety, efficiency, and adequacy of the entire electrical system. It coordinates flows on the high-voltage network, balances production and consumption on a national scale, manages dispatching, and plans strategic interventions. It collaborates with DSOs to ensure consistency between transmission and distribution.

End users (and prosumers): consumers are no longer just passive recipients of energy. More and more often, they become prosumers, that is, producers and consumers, thanks to photovoltaic systems, home storage, and participation in local energy markets.

Technology and service providers: design and provide essential solutions for the functioning of the network: transformers, smart meters, sensors, software (SCADA, EMS, DMS), maintenance services, and tools for energy efficiency.

Electricity market operators: although they do not intervene on the physical network, they manage the buying and selling of energy, demand flexibility, and ancillary services. The increasing integration between technical and commercial aspects makes them increasingly relevant.

Current issues: outdated infrastructure, losses, blackouts

Despite the progress made, the power distribution network still faces various structural and operational issues that limit its efficiency and reliability, especially in an increasingly complex energy scenario such as:

obsolescence of infrastructure: many networks were designed decades ago and are not suitable for managing the current increase in users, distributed generation, or the electrification of consumption. This leads to a higher frequency of failures, high maintenance costs, and lower resilience to extreme weather events;

energy losses along the network: technical losses, due to the resistance of conductors and the inefficiency of some components, represent a significant part of the energy injected. These are compounded by non-technical losses, caused by theft, measurement errors, or malfunctions;

overloads and blackouts: the network is increasingly exposed to the risk of overloads, especially during peak demand or intense weather events. Without advanced monitoring and automation systems, a failure can quickly propagate and cause widespread service disruptions.

Complicating the picture is the new nature of the system: today, energy does not only come from large power plants but from thousands of small distributed producers. This generates:

less predictable bidirectional flows,

intermittency of renewables,

greater difficulty in maintaining the balance between production and consumption.

To tackle these challenges, it is necessary to modernize physical assets and introduce digital technologies. Only then will it be possible to ensure a safe, flexible electrical system ready to support the ongoing energy transition.

The digitalization of the electrical network

The increasing complexity of the electrical system, combined with the need to ensure reliability, efficiency, and flexibility of service, has made the progressive digitalization of the power distribution network essential. This process represents an important technological evolution, transforming a traditionally passive and centralized network into an intelligent, dynamic, and interconnected infrastructure.

Digitalizing the network does not only mean equipping it with new IT tools but integrating it with a series of advanced technologies capable of monitoring, analyzing, and managing energy flows, operational conditions, and anomalies in real-time. The network thus becomes capable of autonomously reacting to critical events, optimizing available resources, promoting new models of distributed consumption and production, and improving interaction between producers, distributors, and end users.

Emerging technologies such as Digital energy twins, for example, allow for the creation of a virtual replica of the physical network, useful for conducting advanced simulations, performing predictive analyses, and optimizing system operation.

In the next paragraph, we will take a closer look at the tools and principles behind this transformation, focusing on key concepts such as smart grid, advanced sensing, distributed intelligence, and cloud platforms, which constitute the backbone of the future electrical network.

Smart grid, sensors, IoT, automation, and cloud

The digitalization of the electrical network takes shape through an integrated set of technologies that converge in the concept of smart grid.

Unlike traditional networks, a smart grid is an “intelligent” network: it communicates, adapts, and responds in real-time to operational conditions, consumption, and variations in production. It offers bidirectionality of flows, self-healing capabilities, and dynamically managed resources.

The main elements that transform a conventional network into a smart network:

advanced sensors: installed along the network, they detect parameters such as voltage, current, frequency, conductor temperature, and insulator status. They provide essential data to diagnose the state of the infrastructure and prevent failures or overloads;

IoT (Internet of Things) devices: intelligent components, connected via the network (often wirelessly), that allow for extensive data collection and distributed control. They can monitor transformers, secondary substations, and even dynamically manage domestic and industrial loads;

automation systems: coordinate interventions on the network, such as the automatic opening of switches or network reconfiguration in case of failure. They reduce intervention times and ensure service continuity even in critical situations;

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) platforms: essential tools for remote supervision and control. They allow operators to monitor the network in real-time, perform remote maneuvers, and activate corrective interventions promptly;

cloud and edge computing: the cloud allows for large-scale storage and analysis of data coming from the network. Edge computing, on the other hand, processes information directly on peripheral devices, improving response speed and local resilience. The hybrid architecture between cloud and edge ensures the best balance between efficiency and timeliness.

intelligent algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI): process the collected data to predict load trends, renewable production, and component status. They support predictive maintenance, the management of distributed energy resources (DER), and dynamic voltage regulation.

Monitoring infrastructure resources with IoT

Integration with Renewable Energies

The transformation of the electrical system necessarily involves the increasingly extensive integration of renewable sources: photovoltaic, wind, hydroelectric, biomass. This process is driven by the decarbonization goals, energy transition, and reduction of fossil fuel use.

However, the widespread integration of renewables poses significant technical challenges for the power distribution network, which must manage a production that is no longer centralized but distributed, variable, and bidirectional.

Renewables, unlike traditional plants, are often small to medium-sized, distributed across the territory, and connected at medium or low voltage. This leads to a revolution in energy flows, which shift from unidirectional to bidirectional.

The main critical issues to address are:

intermittency and variability: production from solar and wind depends on the weather. It is necessary to compensate for fluctuations with rapid regulation systems or with more stable sources;

line congestion: energy injected at points not designed for generation can cause overloads, voltage imbalances, and network losses, especially in residential or rural areas with high photovoltaic density;

energy quality: the interaction between distributed plants and the network can generate electrical disturbances (frequency, phase, harmonics). Solutions such as smart inverters, active filters, and dynamic regulators are needed.

To respond to these challenges, it is necessary to intervene on two fronts:

physical: refurbishment of lines, expansion of substations, installation of new control and regulation devices;

digital: adoption of smart technologies for managing flows, forecasting production, and coordinating distributed plants.

Digitalization and Impact on Consumers

The digitalization of the electrical network represents not only a technological evolution of the infrastructure system but also has direct consequences for end consumers, who are becoming increasingly central in the new energy scenario.

Among the key tools in this process are:

the smart meter, which allows for precise measurement of consumption, bidirectional communication with the operator, and access to advanced services. The collected data enable the visualization of consumption profiles, optimization of energy behaviors, and participation in new dynamic pricing models based on time slots or demand flexibility;

digital platforms for energy management, accessible remotely via apps or web interfaces, which empower consumers to monitor their consumption in real-time, compare it with previous periods or similar users, and receive suggestions to improve energy efficiency;

the evolution towards the prosumer model, a subject that not only consumes but also produces and injects energy into the grid, for example, through home photovoltaic systems or small storage systems. The digital management of these flows allows for the valorization of self-consumption, selling excess energy, and participating in local energy communities or peer-to-peer exchange systems;

personalization of energy services, which are becoming increasingly flexible and targeted: tailored rates, offers integrated with electric mobility or home automation, dynamic contracts that incentivize participation in network flexibility (demand response).

Autonomous Networks, Artificial Intelligence, and Predictive Maintenance

Digital transformation is revolutionizing electrical networks: from static and passively controlled systems, they are becoming intelligent, autonomous, and adaptive.

This evolution is made possible by the integration of advanced technologies such as:

artificial intelligence (AI);

machine learning;

edge computing;

predictive maintenance systems.

All tools that radically change the way the network is managed and controlled.

A concrete application is predictive maintenance: actions are taken not according to fixed deadlines but when data indicates an imminent risk. With predictive models based on AI, it is possible to:

estimate the remaining life of a component;

plan interventions at the optimal time;

reduce sudden failures and downtime.

Networks begin to operate in a semi-autonomous manner. Thanks to distributed control and automation systems, they can automatically reconfigure in the event of a failure, divert energy flows, isolate damaged portions, and restore service continuity without direct human intervention.

Edge computing also plays a key role. By processing information locally, directly at the nodes of the network (such as substations), it allows for ultra-rapid responses in critical situations, avoiding delays related to data transmission to the main control centers.

The goal for the near future is to achieve cognitive electrical networks, capable of learning from their operation, dynamically adapting to the operational context, and cooperating increasingly efficiently with consumers, prosumers, network operators, and other infrastructural systems, such as telecommunications, mobility, or smart building systems.

To facilitate this transformation, it is essential to adopt advanced digital solutions that integrate technical management, automation, and geospatial representation of infrastructures. A Facility Management Software allows for efficient monitoring and management of the entire lifecycle of electrical assets, improving intervention planning, operational safety, and cost optimization. With the support of a Geospatial Digital Twin Software, it is possible to complement the physical network with a dynamic and contextualized three-dimensional digital replica, essential for visualizing the real state of infrastructures, simulating future scenarios, and supporting rapid and informed decisions.

Leveraging these advanced technologies means preparing the electrical network for the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring greater resilience, sustainability, and operational continuity in an increasingly complex, distributed, and interconnected energy system. Try these solutions yourself and discover how to transform the management of the electrical network into an intelligent, transparent, and proactive process.

FAQ – Power Distribution Network

What is the power distribution network?

The distribution network is the infrastructure that allows electricity, generated even from great distances, to safely reach homes, businesses, and services.
