Landscape architecture can be defined as the art of designing, planning, and managing outdoor environments and landscapes in general, on various scales of intervention.

The design of outdoor spaces takes into account various factors, including art, engineering, architecture, and sociology.

Among the priorities of landscape design, we certainly find the quality of the landscape and open space, key elements of transition strategies towards sustainable development models in ecological, economic, and social terms.

Carefully and professionally executed landscape design represents an effective tool to respond to increasingly pressing challenges, such as:

  • mitigation of environmental risk;
  • resilience of urban, peri-urban, and rural systems;
  • conservation of biodiversity;
  • protection of natural resources;
  • conservation and enhancement of natural cultural heritage;
  • reduction of social inequalities and increase in the psycho-physical well-being of communities.

The Importance of Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture focuses on the study and design of the environmental resources of our ecosystem, aiming for the sustainability of the surrounding space and gaining increasing importance in responding to major contemporary challenges.

Below, I list 9 of the main uses of landscape architecture that make this discipline fundamentally important in contemporary design:

  1. conservation of natural environments;
  2. management of rainwater;
  3. regeneration of polluted areas;
  4. soil cleaning;
  5. air purification;
  6. plant care;
  7. temperature control;
  8. development of outdoor activities;
  9. increase in psycho-physical well-being.

1. Conservation of Natural Environments

Natural environments – rich in plants, trees, and gardens – are an integral part of modern cities and represent their pride. More and more people seek to escape the noise and chaotic urban centers to retreat into these “calm” oases.

Landscape architecture provides numerous ideas and solutions aimed at the protection and conservation of these spaces.

2. Rainwater Management

Environmental pollution and climate change are now compromising water supply in many areas of the earth.

Landscape architecture combats this scarcity by identifying alternative methods for water management, such as the collection and storage of rainwater, which is then quickly redirected to the groundwater table.

3. Regeneration of Polluted Areas

Landscape architecture identifies techniques for regenerating polluted areas. One of these techniques is planting, which represents a solution to be used in areas rendered unusable by factories and industries.

4. Soil Cleaning

Another problem addressed by landscape architecture is soil contamination. Among the most common solutions is phytoremediation, which uses plants to remove degradation and pollution from soils, sludge, and groundwater and surface waters.

5. Air Purification

The landscape architect can also deal with air purification. This is made possible simply by planting trees and plants that produce oxygen, absorb air pollution, and make the air cleaner.

6. Plant Care

The proper growth of plants is influenced by a number of factors:

  • soil quality;
  • sun exposure;
  • amount of water;
  • protection from pests.

The landscape architect focuses on the care of plantings and the search for balance among these factors, ensuring the proper positioning of plants and the right soil composition for their growth.

 7. Temperature Control

The growth of built areas on soils and deforestation have caused an increase in temperature.

By creating gardens and parks that purify the air, landscape architecture can help control and mitigate the impact of climate change.

8. Development of Outdoor Activities

It is the task of landscape architects to create natural outdoor environments such as parks, gardens, and natural refuges, where people can relax away from their homes and gain greater recreational and leisure opportunities.

9. Increase in Psycho-Physical Well-Being

Contact with nature is an extremely effective tool for improving the psycho-physical health and quality of life of individuals.

Green areas such as urban parks and gardens represent, in fact, a powerful remedy to restore well-being and serenity, and numerous scientific studies in recent years have shown how experiences in nature can benefit psychological well-being and cognitive function in humans.

How to design Landscape Architecture: tips

Urban areas are spaces in constant evolution, and for their design, landscape architects must consider the delicate balance between creating substantial development and maintaining a safe and healthy environment. To achieve this goal, landscape architects follow several important phases, including:

  • landscape study: landscape planning experts assess environmental and sustainability needs and the desired economic and social opportunities for the project. The studies will identify the effects that the design intervention will have on local temperatures, erosion in the area, and other conditions affecting the surrounding structures and landscapes;
  • identifying land use regulations: every landscape project is subject to specific regulations governing land use. These regulations must be followed precisely and scrupulously for the project to be approved;
  • creating a design plan for infrastructure: a good landscape project will include the design and uses of functional structures and spaces, such as roads and sidewalks, along with other aspects that make the project environmentally healthy and safe. This approach to sustainable landscape and urban planning helps adapt environments to climate change and mitigate future changes.

Innovation in Landscape Architecture

In an increasingly digital world, the integration of technological innovation with design and environmental sustainability represents one of the most significant challenges for professionals involved in environmental design. We know that the design of outdoor spaces combines, among other variables, sustainability, aesthetics, functionality, and increasingly advanced technological design tools offer new opportunities for sustainable planning.

Technological innovation in the field of landscape architecture, while presenting various challenges, including the need for specific training, management of digital workflows, and resistance to change, brings with it a series of long-term benefits that far outweigh the initial difficulties, promoting more conscious and efficient design practices in terms of resources. Among the main innovations in landscape design, we find:

  • design platforms and software: provide valuable support in designing landscapes with zero or positive climate impact and in the customizable design of green spaces and the management of green elements, water systems, or lighting systems;
  • site analysis tools: allow for the evaluation of site characteristics, such as slope, sun exposure, and vegetation cover both on a local and global scale. There are also specific tools that allow for estimating the environmental and social benefits of trees in an urban context;
  • plant selection tools: these valuable and powerful tools are characterized by rich databases of thousands of plant species (in growth) with information on their ecological characteristics, uses, and adaptability to different climatic and soil conditions;
  • project management tools: finally, there are tools for assessing the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure, with sections dedicated to landscape and certification systems for the design and construction of sustainable buildings, with specific criteria for the landscape.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive, and the scenario is constantly evolving; new technologies and innovations are continuously emerging, expanding the possibilities and challenges that can be addressed. In the field of landscape architecture, indeed, digitalization offers a powerful range of possibilities for analyzing, designing, and managing outdoor spaces in a completely innovative and much more efficient manner than in the past. As evidenced by the previous list, technology and digitalization in the field of landscape architecture offer various possibilities from environmental data modeling to climate impact simulation, allowing for informed decision-making, reducing errors, and improving the efficiency of the design process. Another added value obtained through the digitalization of the landscape design process is the ability to visualize and share projects remotely in a detailed and real-time manner. This aspect enhances communication between professionals and stakeholders, and with the community itself, which thus becomes involved in sustainable choices.

Landscape Architecture Ideas and Examples

Among the most important examples of landscape architecture, the most well-known are also in a sense the most historic, witnesses and reminders of an evolution in the design of outdoor spaces increasingly aimed at well-being and sustainability. We have selected some of the most famous:

  • Patio de los Naranjos: located within the Mezquita de Córdoba, a city in southern Spain, the Patio de los Naranjos is considered one of the oldest gardens in Europe. It was founded at the time of the initial construction of the Great Mosque in 784. Originally containing plants such as pomegranate, cypress, and palms, the garden today consists of a simple grid of orange trees – 98 to be exact – planted in rows dating back at least to the late 18th century;
  • Villa d’Este: located in Tivoli, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. It represents a masterpiece of the Italian garden with an impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottos, water games, and hydraulic music;
  • Piazza del Campo: located in Siena, it is a 17th-century square considered one of the “greatest” public spaces in Europe. Originally the site of a Roman forum, the square has represented the cultural heart of the city since the construction of the town hall in the 12th century. “Il Campo,” as the Sienese call it, functions superbly as a civic and social space;
  • Ryōan-ji Garden: located in Japan, it is considered one of the best surviving examples of kare-sansui, or dry landscape garden. It is not exactly known who the designer is or when it was created. Built as a visual form for users with the purpose of achieving meditative states of consciousness, this garden also serves as a reference symbol for Eastern mysticism;
  • Vaux le Vicomte: an example of French baroque landscape, it is the first major work of André Le Nôtre. The garden extends over more than 1,000 acres and expresses the idea of man controlling and manipulating nature;
  • Stowe: the gardens of Stowe House in Buckinghamshire, England, are among the most celebrated in the country. The grand layout of Stowe directly reflects the changing currents of garden design in the 18th century;
  • Stourhead: another exquisite example of English landscape style, the gardens of Stourhead in Wiltshire, England, feature a picturesque path rich in allusions and meanings;
  • Het Loo: the baroque palace and gardens of Het Loo are located in the Veluwe region of the Netherlands. Very similar to the Palace of Versailles, Het Loo originated as a hunting lodge dating back to the late 17th century and is often referred to as the Versailles of Holland;
  • Central Park: the first public landscape park in the United States – Central Park – was designed by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Their social and artistic vision was to provide a place of rest for the explosive number of inhabitants of New York City;
  • Parco Güell: it is a public park of 17.18 hectares with gardens and architectural elements located at the top of the city of Barcelona, on the southern slope of Mount Carmel. Designed as an urban complex, it was designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, the leading exponent of Catalan modernism, commissioned by entrepreneur Eusebi Güell and inaugurated as a public park in 1926;
  • Amsterdam Bos Park: it is an English-style park or landscape park located between the municipalities of Amstelveen and Amsterdam. Every year, nearly 4.5 million people visit this green area, which covers 2,471 acres (about 10 km² or 1,000 hectares), about three times larger than Central Park in New York;
  • Miller Garden: the Miller Garden is located in Columbus, Indiana, and was designed by modernist American landscape architect Dan Urban Kiley between 1953 and 1957. The parts that make up the entire garden are considered classic – woods, hedges, orchards, and lawn – but the spatial configuration of the garden is actually modern in every sense. The 13-acre property is considered one of the most beautiful mid-century modernist residences in the United States and, in 2000, was designated as a national historic landmark.
